The Mangaung Metropolitan includes Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu. Manguang is Sotho for “the place where cheetahs dwell”. It is situated in the Free State Province in the centre of South Africa and is also the judicial capital.

Bloemfontein is rumoured to have been named after an abundance of roses which grew around a fountain on a farm owned by a Dutch settler (Voortrekker), Johannes Nicolaas Brit. Bloemfontein literally means ‘fountain of flowers’ in Dutch.

The Loch Logan Waterfront, at the centre of the landlocked ‘city of roses’, is an entertainment and shopping mecca. There are many museums and art galleries to see. The Sand du Plessis Theatre, opened in 1985, is one of the most modern theatres in the world. It has beautiful architecture and hosts many forms of theatre and concerts. The Free State Botanical garden, on the edge of Bloemfontein boasts 70 hectares of beautiful flora.

Bloemfontein The Golden Gate Highland Park consists primarily of sandstone cliffs. At sunset, the cliffs glow with a golden hue with touches of red and orange. The Vredefort Dome is the oldest impact crater in the world, dating back 2,023 million years.

The Free State has two professional football teams, the Bloemfontein Celtics and Free State Stars. Bloemfontein Celtics won the First Division Inland Stream Champions: 2003/04. In the 2004/2005 season, the Free State Stars won the First Division Championship and have since been promoted to the Premier Soccer League.

BloemfonteinThe Free State Stadium, built in 1952, will host games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. A second tier of seating will be added to the current stadium. After its upgrade for the tournament, it will have a gross seating capacity of 40 000. It is the home ground of Bloemfontein Celtics.
